Our school opened in January 2002, following the merger of Wainuiomata and Parkway Intermediates, both schools with proud histories going back to 1970. Like most schools in Wainuiomata, we have been through a phase of re-building, up-grading and refurbishing to cater for the increased roll and to better meet the needs of our students. The result has been an exciting learning centre that staff and students feel proud to be a part of.
Wainuiomata Intermediate has a unique place in the valley - it is the only educational institution that focuses solely on the developmental and learning needs of Year 7 and 8 students, the emerging adolescents. All our facilities and resources are age-specific and cater for this age group. |
We acknowledge the importance of this critical developmental stage in your child's life and seek to develop the academic and social potential of each student in a safe, supportive environment, while giving them the strategies to cope with the many physical, social, emotional and intellectual changes that they are experiencing.
We offer our students the full range of core curriculum subjects, as well as Technology and Arts programmes, outdoor experiences and a smorgasbord of exciting extracurricular and sporting opportunities and experiences. We provide extension as well as learning support programmes and emphasise competency in literacy and numeracy for all students.
Central to our philosophy is that every student has the potential and the right to learn and succeed in different areas, in different ways and at different levels. Hence, we teach to suit the pace and learning style of the individual, and create a love of learning by building students' self-confidence and self esteem through experiencing and celebrating success.
Our aim is to equip our students with the skills that will make them lifelong learners who not only know what to learn but how to learn, and who enter the next phase of their education with confidence and a keen desire to achieve their goals.
